Course Overview:

A medical transcriptionist is an integral part of a healthcare team.  Transcriptionists must be familiar with the terminology used in every medical specialty and must be able to produce the documents and reports required by each specialty in a professional and competent manner. These reports are the foundation of patient care and not only comprise a patient’s complete record, but also track a patient’s medical history and determine any future treatment.  This course identifies the specific knowledge, skills, and education required for medical transcriptionists and outlines the responsibilities associated with the occupation. Students who complete this course will be well prepared for careers in the medical transcription field, whether they choose to work in private physicians’ offices, clinics or hospital settings, or as self-employed medical transcription entrepreneurs.

About This Course:

We are committed to offering world class interactive online courses that provide training and learning support for the student in a number of ways during their experience. This course structure has been developed to provide activities to guide students throughout the entire process of learning. Learning activities include hands-on assignments that allow students to use what they are learning to allow better transferable skills within their work environments.

When a student learns, they are not alone.   Each student will be supported by our student services department – which ranges from course mentors, registrar, and technical support assistance.   Every month students have a progress report run on them every month by our student services department to ensure they are making satisfactory progress.   If a student falls behind, we reach out to them personally by phone call every month to see if there is anything we can do to continue to assist them with moving forward in their course.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Medical Transcription Fundamentals

In this lesson, you will receive an introduction to Medical Transcription.  First, you will learn about the basics of medical transcription and medical transcription editing, as well as the role of technology in transcription.  From there, you will review basic medical terminology so that you are better able to understand what you are transcribing.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a thorough understanding of the field of medical transcription and the different services transcriptionists and transcription editors provide.

Lesson 2: Medical Specialties

In this lesson, you will learn about medical specialties such as surgery, pharmacology, and laboratory studies.  You will learn the importance of each specialty and the procedures and equipment used in each area.  You will also learn how to transcribe procedures for each specialty.

Lesson 3: Dermatology and Ophthalmology

In this lesson, and the lessons that follow, you will begin to learn about transcribing for the specialties.  Each lesson will provide information on two or three of the specialties, with examples of how to code for each.  This lesson will focus on dermatology, which encompasses the entire integumentary system, and ophthalmology, which covers eye disorders.  You will learn about  the transcription requirements and guidelines for each.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a thorough understanding of how to transcribe for dermatology and ophthalmology.

Lesson 4: Otorhinolaryngology and Pulmonology

In this lesson, you will continue to learn how to transcribe the specialties.  First you will learn about Otorhinolaryngology, which is the study of the ears, nose, and throat.  From there, you will learn about pulmonology, which is the medical specialty that deals with the respiratory system.

Lesson 5: Cardiology and Gastroenterology

In this lesson, you will learn about cardiology and gastroenterology.  You will learn about the structure and functions of each system, and then you will learn how to transcribe and edit for each specialty.

Lesson 6: Urology and Obstetrics/Gynecology

In this lesson, you will learn about the specialty areas of obstetrics/gynecology and urology.  For each area, you will learn about the structure and functions of the body systems involved, as well as common assessments and disorders for each body system.  You will also learn how to transcribe and edit documents for each specialty area, and will have the opportunity to practice transcribing and editing with the activities included in each chapter.

Lesson 7: Orthopedics and Neurology

In this lesson, you will learn about orthopedics and neurology.  You will learn about the structure and functions of the body systems that are treated within these specialties.  You will also learn how to properly transcribe and edit documents within these specialties.

Lesson 8: Immunology, Oncology, and Endocrinology

In this lesson, you will learn about immunology, oncology, and endocrinology.  You will learn about the structure and functions of the body systems that are part of each specialty.  You will also learn how to transcribe and edit documents within each specialty.  

Lesson 9: Career Management

In this lesson you will learn about the medical transcription job search process. You will learn about the different career options available to medical transcriptionists.  You will also learn how to secure and maintain employment.  Upon completion of this lesson, you will have a thorough understanding of how to pursue employment as a medical transcription specialist.
