Course Overview:

Adobe Illustrator allows you to create artwork that you can use for web pages or any print or electronic media. This course will give students a good overview of the tools and features of Illustrator. Students will create artwork using the various tools including the pencil and pen tools. Students will learn the various ways to apply color to their artwork. Students will work with layers, the 3D effects, and symbols.

This course prepares a student to take the Adobe Graphic design & illustration using Adobe Illustrator certification exam.

Students will need to have a copy of Adobe Illustrator CC in order to do coursework.

Students will:
  • Students will identify the features of the Illustrator screen.
  • Students will create and edit basic shapes.
  • Students will use the pen tools to create drawings.
  • Students will add color to their Illustrator documents.
  • Students will work with text objects in Illustrator.
  • Students will edit drawings using masks, blending modes, envelopes and meshes.
  • Students will define and use symbols and edit their drawings using filters and effects.
  • Students will use the Illustrator filters, effects and graphic styles in their Illustrator projects.
  • Students will work with symbols, importing graphics from other sources and printing their Illustrator artwork.
  • Students will create a project in Illustrator to demonstrate what they have learned in this course.

About This Course:

We are committed to offering world class interactive online courses that provide training and learning support for the student in a number of ways during their experience. This course structure has been developed to provide activities to guide students throughout the entire process of learning. Learning activities include hands-on assignments that allow students to use what they are learning to allow better transferable skills within their work environments.

When a student learns, they are not alone.   Each student will be supported by our student services department – which ranges from course mentors, registrar, and technical support assistance.   Every month students have a progress report run on them every month by our student services department to ensure they are making satisfactory progress.   If a student falls behind, we reach out to them personally by phone call every month to see if there is anything we can do to continue to assist them with moving forward in their course.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1:  Getting Started

In this lesson you will get comfortable with the Illustrator environment and look at some of the basic tools you will be using throughout the course.

Lesson 2: Creating and Transforming Shapes

In this lesson, you will learn to work with some of the drawing tools Illustrator has to offer. You will draw rectangular and elliptical shapes and draw polygons and stars. Once you have drawn the objects you will learn to edit them by changing the shape of the objects, changing their fill, the stroke and using the transform tools to rotate, skew, sheer and otherwise distort the objects.

Lesson 3: Working with Color

In this lesson you will explore the color features in Illustrator. You will learn how to apply fill and line colors to your artwork and save colors used regularly into the Color Palette. You will create groups of color using the Color Guide panel and create patterns to paint your artwork.

Lesson 4: Working with Text

In this lesson you will work with text in Illustrator. You will add various types of text: point, path and area, and learn how to apply character and paragraph formatting and styles. You will also learn about warping text and converting text to paths.

Lesson 5: Working with Layers

In this lesson you will be working with layers to help you organize your projects.

Lesson 6: Blending and Brushes

In this lesson you will create blends and work with brushes. The Blend Tool allows you to create new shapes by blending existing shapes and allows us to copy shapes. You will also explore the different kinds of brushes available in Illustrator.

Lesson 7:  Effects and Graphic Styles

In this lesson you will add effects and graphic styles to objects drawn in Illustrator. Also, you will learn options for making your work usable on the web.

Lesson 8:  Creating Art for T-shirts and the Web

In this lesson you will use work with symbols of Illustrator and learn how to prepare content for the web.

Lesson 9:  Using Illustrator with Other Applications

In this lesson you will take a look at combining Illustrator artwork with images from other applications. 

Lesson 10: Putting it All Together

You made it! You have now had a chance to work with most of the tools Illustrator offers. Now it will be up to you to practice what you have learned and apply it to the work you plan to do with Illustrator.

This lesson will allow you to use the tools you have learned in this class to create a project of your own. You can create any kind of project you want. 

All necessary materials are included.

This course prepares a student to take the Adobe Graphic design & illustration using Adobe Illustrator certification exam.
